and THE DANCE COMPANY Born in Madras, now living in London, Shobana Jeyasingh has directed the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company since 1988. Her choreography for the Company includes: Palimpsest (1996); Raid (1995); Romance.... with footnotes (1993); Making of maps (1992); New Cities Ancient Lands (1991); Correspondences (1990); and Configurations (1988). Jeyasingh's work for television includes Duets with Automobiles (for the Arts Council/BBC series) which was shortlisted for the IMZ Dance Screen Award Frankfurt; Map of Dreams (After lmage Productions) and Dancing by Numbers (Bandung File) for Channel 4; Late for The Late Show; and a Network East Dance Special for the BBC. Jeyasingh was awarded a London Dance and Performance award in 1988, received her third Digital Dance Award in 1992 and, in 1993, an Arts Council Women in the Arts Project award in acknowledgement of her valuable contribution to the arts over the past decade. In 1993, her Company was the overall winner of the Prudential Award for the Arts, one of the U.K.'s most prestigious awards. Since its inception, the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company has gone from strength to strength, establishing itself as the leading exponent of contemporary lndian dance. The Company tours extensively throughout Britain and has visited major European and North American festivals such as SDrinndance in Holland, Nova Danca Britanica in Lisbon,Jacob's Pillow Festival, Massachussetts and the Vienna Music Festival. The Company is renowned for its commissions of new music. In 1988 its commission to Michael Nyman for Configurations resulted in the musical work, Symphony 2, which is now regularly played live in concert and has been released on C.D. Since then, leading European composers such as Kevin Volans (Correspondences), Orlando Gough (Late), Christos Hatzis (Byzantium), Glyn Perrin (Romance....with footnotes and Raid) have created work for the Company. Shobana Jeyasingh was awarded an MBE in January 1995 and holds an honorary MA from Surrey University and an honorary doctorate from De Montfort University, Leicester. |
